Thrill's Big Brown Blog

April 19, 2018

Mat Hayward

Hola Bitcholas,

I don't do 'metrics'. In other words, I have no idea how many people may or may not read the Big Brown Blog...but Wobin, who has access to said 'metrics', assures me that there are plenty of you out there. For that, thank you. Not sure what the appeal is, but I'm glad YOU do!

To that end, just know that most of my blogs are as random as it gets. Some thoughts cross my mind...and important or not...I commit those thoughts to 'paper'. Technically, I commit my thoughts to 'computer monitor', but that has no ring to it.

Anyway, today I have a more measured blog...but not because I want to.

The last few weeks have been a wee bit brutal for the show for various reasons. Most of it is 'water under the bridge', as they say, but this week has been especially trying and, in one particular case, downright upsetting. In fact, I've spent three days trying to figure out how to vent without being too confrontational on the blog and without throwing anyone in particular under the bus. To say I've been "livid" is an understatement, but that won't solve anything.

Anyway, I came exceptionally close to just quitting the blog thing altogether. I figured, 'what's the f*!*ing point of taking the time to do it if it's going to be taken down or edited or whatever?' That is not the norm, but earlier this week an anonymous individual within the industry threw a hissy-fit and it ended with the removal of my words.

As an adult, I recognize and accept that not everyone is gonna agree with your point of view. I don't agree with everyone either. So what? The problem is when expressing your opinion becomes an imposition of your will. There's a huge difference. For example, we could argue about the merit of a musical act. You like them, I don't. Let's just say that's our situation. That act comes to town to perform and instead of choosing to not go to the show, I go to the show, interrupt it, go on stage, tell all of the fans of the act that they have no right to like them, then, in a final move of asshattery, I cancel the rest of the performance...cheating YOU out of what you like simply because they bother ME.

That's petty and self-absorbed. I've never thought that was OK.

The only thing that would make that more offensive is if I did it anonomously. That's the case with the blog. Whoever had the hissy-fit has neither stated the reasoning behind their opposition, nor identified themselves. I take issue with this because if you won't 'stand by your convictions', you don't HAVE convictions. If you don't have convictions, don't waste MY time and certainly don't rain on other people's parades. It's cowardly and it's insulting. It's made worse by the fact that this 'hissy fit' was thrown by someone IN the radio industry. This industry has many problems and shortcomings already. To the coward; you are part of the problem.

My name and picture are attached to each blog I write. I stand by what I have to say. That's part of the reason I bother to say anything. Have the decency to do the same or just shut up. There's no problem being a coward, but keep it to yourself. Our show and this blog aren't designed for that. We're just here to entertain and hopefully spark some meaningful discussion about meaningless topics. That's pretty much it.

At any rate, I was debating just calling it quits on the blog and focusing solely on the spoken word of the show...but then, that would let the coward win and that's not OK. So I apologize to the rest of you for even considering it. The blog will carry on.

I wanna be clear; I don't call the 'coward' a coward to be provocative, I call the coward a coward specifically because that is what they are. And without them identifying themselves, there's nothing else for me to call them. Well, I have a LOT of things I've called them, but you know what I'm saying.

To the coward, kiss my ass. Name NOT withheld.

OK then, I feel a little better, I guess. Just needed to get that off my chest.

To the REST of you, do what you do best and STAY BEAUTIFUL!
